IPEDS Outcome Measures

IPEDS Outcome Measures survey component information and glossary

Degree-granting institutions report the outcomes of all entering degree/certificate-seeking undergraduate students who are not only first-time, full-time, but also part-time and non-first-time (i.e., transfer-in) students. Students are separated into eight subcohorts by entering status (i.e., first-time or non-first-time), attendance status (i.e., full-time or part-time), and Pell Grant recipient status.
The award status is measured at specific points in times and for students that did not receive an award after 8 years, their enrollment status is reported at eight years after entering the reporting institution.

Cohort Year
July 1st to June 30th of the following year. Students are reported once in one of the four OM cohorts: first-time, full-time; first-time, part-time: non-first-time, full-time; or non-first-time, part-time.
First-time Student
A student who has no prior postsecondary experience (except as noted below) attending any institution for the first time at the undergraduate level. This includes students enrolled in academic or occupational programs. It also includes students enrolled in the fall term who attended college for the first time in the prior summer session, and students who entered with advanced standing (college credits or recognized postsecondary credential earned before graduation from high school).
Non First-time (transfer-in)Student
A student entering the reporting institution for the first time but known to have previously attended a postsecondary institution at the same level (e.g., undergraduate, graduate). This includes new students enrolled in the fall term who transferred into the reporting institution the prior summer session. The student may transfer with or without credit. For systems of coordinated institutions (multi-campus system), students are to be identified as transfer-in students upon entering an institution from another institution within the same coordinated system.
Full-time Student
[Undergraduate]: A student enrolled for 12 or more semester credits.
Part-time Student
[Undergraduate]: A student enrolled for less than 12 semester credits.
Enrolled other/somewhere else (transfer-out)
A student that leaves the reporting institution and enrolls at another institution.
Still Enrolled
A student who is actively enrolled for credit at the reporting institution during the most recent term (spring or summer) is considered still enrolled.
Enrollment Status Unknown
IPEDS calculates this field by subtracting the sum of students that are still enrolled at the reporting institution, the number of students that enrolled at another instituion after leavign the reporting institution and the number of students that receive an award from the reported instituiton from the "adjusted" entering cohorts.
Award and enrollment status
Reported at four, six, and eight years after entering the reporting institution. For example: students who entered in 2015-16 academic year (July 1, 2015 - June 30, 2016), the reported status on these students are as of the following dates:

  • Four-year status point as of August 31, 2019
  • Six-year status point as of August 31, 2021
  • Eight-year status point as of August 31, 2023
